Russia will not import GMO products, the country’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that the nation has enough space and resources to produce organic food.

Moscow has no reason to encourage the production of genetically modified products or import them into the country, Medvedev told a congress of deputies from rural settlements on Saturday.

“If the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don’t need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic food,” he said.

The prime minister said he ordered widespread monitoring of the agricultural sector. He added that despite rather strict restrictions, a certain amount of GMO products and seeds have made it to the Russian market.

Earlier, agriculture minister Nikolay Fyodorov also stated that Russia should remain free of genetically modified products.

At the end of February, the Russian parliament asked the government to impose a temporary ban on all genetically altered products in Russia.

The State Duma’s Agriculture Committee supported a ban on the registration and trade of genetically modified organisms. It was suggested that until specialists develop a working system of control over the effects of GMOs on humans and the natural environment, the government should impose a moratorium on the breeding and growth of genetically modified plants, animals, and microorganisms.

Earlier this month, MPs of the parliamentary majority United Russia party, together with the ‘For Sovereignty’ parliamentary group, suggested an amendment of the existing law On Safety and Quality of Alimentary Products, with a norm set for the maximum allowed content of transgenic and genetically modified components.

There is currently no limitation on the trade or production of GMO-containing food in Russia. However, when the percentage of GMO exceeds 0.9 percent, the producer must label such goods and warn consumers. Last autumn, the government passed a resolution allowing the listing of genetically modified plants in the Unified State Register. The resolution will come into force in July.

What you have in the statistics is 78 yrs vrs 70 ...

Which statistics would that be, specifically, the source please? Or are you making sh*t up? While it's true that many Americans suffer in the old age from dementia and hear related diseases, you have to look at the AVERAGES instead of picking cases based on your "I know a guy who..." BS. Do you have statistics that show health of a 60 year Russian AVERAGE man to an AVERAGE American man? I bet it would be revealing.

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do

Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene

Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that no one is escaping
To desolation row

What you have in the statistics is 78 yrs vrs 70 and you forget that most of the americans are either suffering from alzheimer's dementia and other vegetative states, cancers and heart diseases that would kill them, except the drugs keep them just barely alive and doddering in a semi conscious state in huge old age factories (I have a buddy who works in one)to drain any money they might have left on exorbitant pharma costs. Ya they suck air longer..through a tube

Probably because we are all on anti-depressants, benzodiazepines, pain medications, etc. Big Pharma wants us to live for eternity so they can continue to charge medical bills. HOWEVER, talk to any American in their seventies after they have taken their 7 prescription drugs everyday and ask them how they really feel. Long life doesn't exactly equal quality of life...no matter how rich you are.

here goes a fine example of Russian stupidity again, just like in the old Soviet days when Lysenko dictated the state how genetics works and then of course how dangerous computers are....

You idiots don't realize that most "organic" foods you eat are already genetically modified, through selective breeding or mutations from ionizing radiation. You continue to base your decisions on the fear of the new and the unknown, instead of evidence.

Re member the vote they had in Washington State re GMO labeling or something pertaining to? At first it was a done deal but as the campaigning rolled along and monsanto opened up the war chest, by the time the day arrived, it was struck down???How the f uck does that happen?? GMO's in our food, the fracking/oil rigs that are polluting our water tables and our shores, the leaking of our nuclear power plants, the way in which the drug companies push their drugs onto the populace or so many others issues.

Bravo Russia,
I hope that someone here in the US Congress will read this article. In the US, they don't care about people and a lot of food is biologically, chemically, or genetically modified. And people eat that and get health problems.

In a nutshell, they don't dare label what is in american food. Remember when they finally divulged all the stuff in cigarettes. We only thought tar, nicotine, a little toxic this and that, but turns out something like 150 different carcinogens etc.. The label would have to be huge.. Another reason I'm so glad I am not an american.

Sound like you are Genetics Genius on Monsanto payroll
There is a big difference between GMOs' which are designed to harm people and the one which are naturally enhanced to adapt to climate and retain all natural qualities. Russian have worked on natural enhancement rather than artificial alteration of fruits and vegetables before Monsanto even existed.
I.e. Ivan Vladimirovič Mičurin .
Natural food in Russia is one big reason why people out there still have brains end common sense even after 70 years of torture, suppression and extermination versus Walmart people in USA... :)

There are all sorts of genetic tinkering that can take place. Some are harmless; some dangerous. Stretching a cross between species or nearly related genera through the use of a bridge species (e.g., Zea x Saccharum crossed with Sorgho x Saccharum) will probably, if the forebears are all wholesome, edible plants, produce descendants that are wholesome and edible. Introducing wheat DNA into corn or sorghum could be disastrous for people with gluten allergies, and the less compatible the ancestors are, the greater the possibility of unanticipated allergens, pathogens, or outright toxicity occurring in the progeny.

Why is it that everything that requires basic common sense to figure out today is coming from Russia?

Because Politicians in Russia are patriots rather than vested interest sell outs like our Western Politicians.

So long as large corporates bung enough cash or promise enough future favours then politicians are bought off every time. Politicians in the West are also undeniably thick, why? Because they have debased the whole publics perception of serving the people. We get dregs wanting to be politicians.

There is nothing wrong with genetically modified food, the only people who think otherwise don't have enough brains to understand anything related to genetics to begin with. That said I do agree it should be labeled so people who don't want to eat it don't have to. That said Russia doesn't really need GMOs as they have more then enough capacity to sustain themselves on normal food, GMOs are mostly useful for countries that can't sustain themselves on normal foods due to land restrictions.

The "elite" in the US have noticed their shrinking economy and decided to get control of necessities. Seeds, they are getting control of through Monsanto and others. Water, they're getting control of through having it ruined by oil/fracking companies, and through gobbling up of water rights by Bechtel, Nestle, and others.

If Russia really wants to fight back against the "powers that be" in the US, start making life hard for their front companies and encouraging others to do the same, and enabling that.

Then they'll get a better perspective on things.
