Japanese Yakuza Headman Arrested in Thailand

A Japanese national, who is allegedly the leader of an organized crime syndicate, known as the Yakuza, has been arrested in a Bangkok hotel following a multinational police cooperation investigation.

Bangkok, the 10th of February 2010 [PDN]: Lieutenant General Wuthi Liptapallop (Thai Immigration Police Commissioner) held a press conference to announce the successful apprehension of Mr. Anai Kenichi a Japanese nation at a room in Silom Soi 7, Bangkok. Mr. Kenichi allegedly fled to Thailand from Japan following a warrant for his arrest.

Mr. Kenichi is allegedly the head of the Japanese criminal gang ‘Yakuza,’ Japan’s second largest criminal organization. Mr. Kenichi is wanted by Japanese authorities over unauthorized firearm possession and for the murder of Mr. Watanabe Nobuhiro in July of 2009, a rival Inagawa gang member. He had entered the Kingdom of Thailand in October of 2009, changing his name to Senta Zato in an attempt to avoid detection.

Following cooperation between Japanese and Thai authorities, Mr. Kenichi was successfully apprehended, he has been charge in Thailand with overstaying his visa. Contact with the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok will be made in order to get Kenichi deported back to Japan for his murder and illegal firearm possession trial.

Harry read Bangkok post article which says: Immigration police chief Wuthi Liptapanlop yesterday said Anai Kenichi, 41, was the head of the Kato Rengo-kai group, a faction of the Sumiyoshi-kai, Japan's second-largest crime syndicate which is thought to have 6,000 members. Mr Kenichi and other gang members allegedly shot dead Watanabe Nobuhiro, 34, a member of Japan's third-largest yakuza gang, the Inagawa, in Kanagawa prefecture last July. He fled Japan on a counterfeit passport and has been staying in Thailand since last October, Pol Lt Gen Wuthi said. Mr Kenichi was arrested by immigration police at Diamond Tower apartment on Soi Silom 7 after Thai authorities coordinated with Japanese police. Mr Kenichi has no criminal record in Thailand but police believe he was assisted by fellow gang members while in hiding here.

If Kenichi san is indeed the head of the yakuza, no one here would dare touch him. The Yakuza have enormous influence in Japan, and he would be worth probably 10 times more than Thailand's GDP; so the story might need a bit of actual reporting on before we proceed..?
