Algae, sometimes referred to as pond scum, is quickly emerging as a tool that holds promise in solving many of the challenges faced by society in the 21st century. Many consider it to be the most promising feedstock for generating the massive quantities of biofuels that will be required to meet the world’s ever-increasing energy demands. These fuels, which range from biodiesel to rocket fuel, have lower sulfur content than traditional petro fuels. Because algae sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere extremely effectively, algae-derived biofuels are carbon neutral.

The non-fuel products derived from algae are almost too numerous to count. Pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, biodegradable plastics, pigments, animal feed, and organic fertilizer barely scratch the surface of algae’s potential to generate products that can benefit mankind.
