Horrendous Piece of Journalism about Pattaya Ripped Apart

A few weeks ago Phillip Martin put out a series of articles about prostitution on the Huffington Post site, and one was an abysmal piece of garbage about Pattaya. It exemplifies the kind of shotty journalism we’re used to seeing about Thailand. This lazy style of writing only helps to perpetuate the ignorance that most of the world has in regards to Thai women, prostitution in Thailand, and Western men who vacation or live in Thailand. I will now rip his article apart in every way and I’ll do it effortlessly because he made it so easy. I will include excerpts from his article in green and my comments in regular black font below. You can read the full article here:

It was twilight, and I didn’t know what to expect as I arrived by car to Pattaya, Thailand.
That’s how he started off his piece. You didn’t know what to expect in Pattaya Phillip? Have you heard of the internet? I can’t think of another place where you could so accurately know exactly what to expect before visiting. Do a Google image search for the term, “Pattaya,” and look at pictures quickly as you scroll down the page for exactly two minutes. By the time your two minutes is up you’d have a great idea of what to expect out of Pattaya. This line of his is so lazy and cliché; Phillip needs to learn how to use Google.

The beach town’s famed nightlife was already in full swing. Pattaya is a “Wild West” of bars, massage parlors, brothels and strip clubs. I watched as inebriated men wandered up and down the red-light district with its neon-sketched bars to the left and right. As I watched, dozens upon dozens of women enticed men to come inside. Sex tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry and a key element in the underground trade of human trafficking, said Ken Franzblau of Equality Now in New York. “But the money is essentially going to the corrupt local officials, the bar owners. Those that are controlling the activity of the women in those locations.

Excellent work in using the term “strip clubs” in Pattaya Phillip; I wonder how many $20 lap dances you can get. And red light district? Are we in Europe? How does he know if the men were so inebriated? That’s the kind of term I’d throw around in a Spring Break hotspot filled with young men who can’t handle their alcohol without stumbling about. That’s just a horrible way to characterize Walking Street patrons; it’s really not accurate. Then he quotes another genius, and I’m not even sure the quote matches up with the topic from the rest of the paragraph. Ken Franzblau doesn’t mention Pattaya specifically, but he does say that local officials and bar owners are getting the money and controlling the prostitution. How is this even close to being true? Bar owners make money on bar fines and by selling alcohol. A small portion of the profits are passed on to local officials. Phillip and Ken don’t understand that the women usually get paid directly by the man for sex and that they don’t have to pass any of the money up to the bars and certainly not to local officials. The bar fine is separate, and it’s justifiable if you ask me. The girls even make money off the drinks as we all know. There are also many freelancers on Walking Street and they don’t pass any money on to the clubs they go to or to police or officials. It’s a free market economy for the women, what in the F is Ken talking about? If anything I feel bad for some of the struggling GoGo’s that have to make payoffs.

Adding to the complexity, Friedman said, is the fact that not every prostitute in Pattaya is working against her or his will and that the decision to work in the red-light district is sometimes accepted by friends and family.

Not every prostitute in Pattaya is working against her will? Easily one of the most absurd statements I’ve ever heard about the place. First of all 99% of the Thai girls can walk whenever they want to. Most of them bounce around from GoGo to Gogo and bar to bar looking for a place they genuinely want to work in the most. Most of them have contracts and if they walk on the contract they just don’t get paid for however many days into the month they have worked. This is fair because they can quit on the 1st of the month and not lose any money and because the bars only pay them the money from drinks/salary, so it’s not like they didn’t make money off of their customers in that time. You also get the sense that these guys don’t realize that prostitution exists in Thailand outside of the tourist spots. Thailand has had a flourishing prostitution trade going on long before Walking Street even existed.

One young woman tells me she became a prostitute because she couldn’t find a job in her village near the border with Laos and followed her sister to Pattaya.

There’s a sarcastic joke in the U.S. that goes like this, “If you give hooker money to go buy cocaine…..she won’t come back.” And the sarcasm comes into play because it’s so obvious that this is the case. Similarly, if you ask a hooker why she became a hooker she’s probably not going to say, “Because I like boom boom and it pay much more than 7-11.” That’s not the answer she’d tell Phillip, but more often than not it’s the real one. But Phillip if nothing else Phillip continues his consistency by asking this question (a real way to get the party started), and then using her answer in the piece as if there is much of a chance that’s it true. Obviously a bar girl is going to say she couldn’t find a job, but that’s very rarely the case. This is poor journalism because most people realize that the girls excuse for being a prostitute is flimsy at best.

“The reason why you may see more Thais ending up in North America is that [Pattaya is] kind of an incubation place, if you will,” Friedman said. “Potential opportunistic pimps will go in there and say, ‘I have this great opportunity. We can bring you to the United States, and you can make four or five times what you’re making here, and you can live a very good life, and you’ll basically be able to have a lot of money and freedom,’ and so forth. So they work out some kind of arrangement to get them over to the United States and once they’re there, they’re put into this situation where, as you say, it’s like a circuit. Where they’ll be in one particular location for a while, and then they’ll spend two weeks in another location.”

Go into a lawyer’s office in Thailand Phillip and tell them you’ll pay anything to bring 3 Thai women back with you to the U.S. Then count the seconds until they laugh you out of the front door. It’s almost impossible for a Thai woman to visit the U.S. even if she has the best of intentions. It’s a brutal process, and unless she’s married to a citizen or she can show significant enough assets, she’s not going to get permission to visit the U.S. This guy Friedman is talking out of his ass and Phillip is then quoting him because he is too lazy to do a little research. I have heard numerous times that women in Pattaya have been offered to work in other countries in Asia, and I have heard rumors about Russia. But I have never heard of a single woman in Pattaya being propositioned to work as a hooker in the U.S. It’s B.S. I’m sure a few here and there have been smuggled in, but not a tenth of a percent compared to the amount of Chinese or Eastern European women who operate in major cities in the U.S. Many of those women can easily go visit the U.S. by plane with a round trip ticket and don’t mind becoming an illegal when they don’t take their flight back because the U.S. isn’t harsh on illegal immigration. But Thai girls can’t just hop on a plane and come to the U.S., it’s next to impossible for that to happen. What is this guy talking about? Does the pimp marry them? Because outside of that or smuggling them in by boat (which happens but rarely and mostly with Chinese women), there is no other way to get them in.

Other glaring errors in the article:
- He quotes 240 baht for a price of sex
- He says he was in a place called, “Chocolate Butterfly Bar” when no bar of that name exists
- He overestimates the Russian Mafia’s pull in town, and doesn’t understand that the Thai Police run things.
- I can’t say he accuses Pattaya of being a pedophile hot-spot because he never quite goes there, but he does discuss child prostitution for about 20% of the article and it is an article about Pattaya, so I think he is indirectly saying it. And this is troubling to me because for all of the sex and prostitution in Pattaya, you don’t often hear and never see child prostitution. I’m sure it happens as it happens in every country, but why even bother writing about it if it’s not an overt problem, at least compared to everywhere else. Child prostitution is heinous; and it does exist in Thailand, but linking it directly to Pattaya as if Pattaya is some kind of centerpiece of the issue is ridiculous.

The standards of journalism are headed South in a hurry. After all, Huff Post is a major website in the U.S. and millions of people read their articles. How they can let this man post this junk without an editor picking up on some of the laziness is beyond me. I will try and get this article out and about, but don’t expect Phillip to respond to anything. Evidently he could care less about the integrity of his articles, so even if he realizes that his entire article was full of s**t, he wouldn’t bother admitting it or correcting his mistakes. This ties into a theme I’ve discussed many times recently, which is that the reputation of Thailand, Thai women, and men who like to visit Thailand is probably not going to get better anytime soon, maybe not forever. Just think about it, if the average person in the U.S. knew nothing about Pattaya prior to reading this article, what would they think of people who vacation there? Phillip wants the average American to think we’re either pedophiles or we take advantage of poor women who can’t find any other work for $8 sex. There’s no accountability here and it’s a shame.

Good job that man.
I sometimes wonder if they even visit the place to get facts for their article. This article, (Huff not you), is so bad it makes you wonder.

Good article Buddy. We need more people to stand up to the lies and slander about Pattaya and Thailand.
Clearly this is a HUGE (like I mean HUGE, just check out what they do on YouTube) Global push from ruthless, unethical, powerful, secret and semi-secret organizations who plan to shut down prostitution in Thailand (and the world), thus collapsing Thai tourism and the Thai economy and forcing the girls and their family’s to continue living in poverty, working in rice paddies or in => multinational owned factories <=.
Main reason they are doing this, in my opinion: Is to to stop the millions of western men who take their hard earned western dollars to Thailand to spend and enjoy. Western men, in their millions, who will spend freely and pull out all stops to to meet REAL women, normal women, like the beautiful sexy Lady's of Thailand. Men, in their millions, who just can not endure another minute of BS from weird, freaky, estrogen taking, fat, nasty, toxic, bitchy, yeasty, nutcase, hormone imbalanced, infertile, sexless, eunuch women in their own country's.
Good Luck Buddy
Dick
