How to make a douche with home remedies?
(23 Aug 2007)
Though a lot of women try douching at home to rid themselves of foul smells and vaginal burning or itching, it is not the best thing to do. Research has shown that douching reduces the chances of conception by about 30 per cent.

The vagina has a self cleaning system and contains bacteria that help keep the vagina infection free.

Regular douching however, changes the chemical balance which is naturally preserved by the body. By douching, you inadvertently introduce new bacteria to the vaginal environment that spread up into the vulva, cervix and uterus. If the infection becomes severe, it can also affect the fallopian tubes. Regular douching can lead to constant irritations in the vaginal area. Chances of the occurrence of infections like bacterial vaginosis also increase. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases also increases when you have the habit of douching regularly.

Though regular douching is not recommended, a case of bacterial vaginosis may require occasional douching. The first thing that you need to do for making a home made douche is to get a bottle that is specifically designed for douching.

To prepare your own home made douche, you can try the following:
• Take an unused tampon and soak it in yoghurt. Insert it into your vagina at the time of your monthly periods.
• Garlic has anti-bacterial and anti fungal properties. Apply ground garlic paste on the affected area.
• You could also try inserting the calendula herb.
• If the pH of the vaginal area is imbalanced, the acidity levels can be raised by using boric acid as a douche.
• To a boiling pot of water, add a bowlful of calendula herb. Stir it so that the calendula herb gets completely absorbed. Once that is done, chill it and then use it as a douche.
• Take a tea bag and soak it in cool water. Chill it by keeping it in the refrigerator and then use it in your vaginal area.
• To your douche bottle, add a cup of white vinegar. Then top up the rest of the bottle with warm water. The warm water helps you feel clean, fresh and comfortable.
• Take about a glassful of warm water and add to it two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. To this solution, add about ten drops of tea tree oil. Mix well and fill your douche bag with the solution. Douche twice a day, in the morning or evening to prevent bacterial vaginosis.

It really depends upon your purpose in douching. The normal vaginal flora will provide an effective barrier against many types of unfriendly bacteria. Adding additional elements will often create a mild imbalance and result in vaginal infections. If you already have a mild vaginal infection, then boric acid suppositories and acidophilus suppositories (or douches) may be helpful. The vaginal terrain is typically acid, so a douche of some apple cider vinegar (with water) will help maintain this balance. If you are attempting to "rinse discharge" then the source of the discharge needs to be identified. If you are experiencing other symptoms, then you may have a vaginal infection, and need to have this checked. If you are seeking to enhance other aspects of your relationships, then a few (underline few) drops of lavendar or other healing essential oil in a douche (shaken) may be comforting.

Vaginal Douche Uses:
In case one has a previous history of infection or vaginal discharge (most commonly and important vaginitis) douches are useful. Otherwise using douche is not advisable.
How to Make Vaginal Douche:
• Add 20-30ml of vinegar in diluted form to half a liter of boiled water. This is used in cleaning or douching vaginal discharge.
• Add 20-30ml hydrogen peroxide and 5ml bayberry myrtle in a pint of water and used it as vaginal douche.
• During the vaginal discharge one usually take antibiotic course and this course usually hampers the normal flora in the vagina.
For this acidophilus lactobacillus are required to normalize the flora. Acidophilus capsules (6-8) from a health food store or 20ml of plain, unsweetened yoghurt is taken in warm water and used for cleansing and restoring the flora.
• Personal hygiene can be attained by cleaning the part with normal warm water and keeping the area clean. Do not wear unwashed undergarments or moist undergarment. This promotes infection. Douching should be done only when there is infection. Frequent douching can also damage the flora and promotes infection.
• If herbal douche are used, they should be steeped for many minutes in water that has just been boiled; then store this preparation in a sterile environment until used.
• Mix equal parts of chamomile, wintergreen and sage. Add 1/2 cup to 2 cups of boiling water, let it steep 10-20min, strain it. Add warm, sterile water to make up the full amount. Best to use immediately. This is used to soothe and heal; also for abnormal discharges.
• Another herbal vaginal douche formula is made by adding equal parts of peppermint, comfrey, spearmint and wax myrtle. Add 1/2 cup to 2 cups of boiling water, let it steep 10-20min, strain it. Add warm, sterile water to make up the full amount. Best to use immediately. This will help you to soothe and heal; also for abnormal discharges.
• Regular douching can kill beneficial micro-organisms and leave you open for invasion by the infection-causing variety of micro-organisms. So douching has to be done only when indicated.

I know that some gynecologists frown on douching because it can upset the vaginal balance or possibly spread infection into the uterus. Nevertheless, I've never heard of this being a problem. It is for culturally misguided reasons that vaginal douches and deodorants are popular, their purpose being to mask natural odors. The use of sprays and antifungal medications may result in bacterial overgrowth, which can cause odor, irritation, discharge, and pain."

Simply rinse the vaginal area with water when bathing, or use a mild soap externally if desired."

"Douching commonly causes irritation, allergic reactions, and chemical vaginitis from the strong chemicals often used in the douche solutions. Douches can also affect external tissues, producing swelling, inflammation, and other symptoms of dermatitis. Toxic chemicals are easily absorbed through delicate vaginal skin. An FDA advisory review panel says there is no need to douche and blames "tradition, ignorance, and commercial advertising" for the practice. Do, however, rinse the vaginal area with plain water regularly when bathing."

"It is useful in treating various skin and nail funguses; it is also effective against Candida infections. A douche or sitz bath of warm Desert willow tea is an excellent localized application for vaginal Candida overgrowths from antibiotics or steroid use. The tea internally can be systemically useful in the above-mentioned issues. Desert willow has promise in treating valley fever or coccidioidomycosis. The responsible organism, Coccidioides immitis, is a soil mold common in the arid American Southwest."

"Leave it in all day long; then in the evening you want to do a douche. There's a couple of douches that are great to clean you all out. One of my favorites is a pint of water with a couple of tablespoons of fresh-squeezed lemon or lime juice. You can also use a couple of tablespoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar. Spectrum Natural is an excellent brand. BISER: So, the bolus is in at night? "The usual approach is to douche with one of these teas twice each day, using 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 grams) of herb per pint of water. One to two pints (500-1,000 ml) are usually enough for each douching session. Echinacea is also known to improve immune function (page 255) in humans.8 In order to increase resistance against infection, many doctors recommend oral use of the tincture or alcohol-preserved fresh juice of echinacea (1 teaspoon (5 ml) three or more times per day)—during all types of infection—to improve resistance. "Heron recommends a douche of antiseptic herbs such as St. John's wort, goldenseal, echinacea, fresh plantain (Plan-tago major), garlic, and calendula along with demulcent herbs like comfrey leaves and self-heal to soothe the membranes. Calendula is both antiseptic and reparative. This douche is alternated with one of acidophilus. A suppository prescribed by Dr. Hudson consists of powdered boric acid mixed with three herbs—berberis, goldenseal, and calendula (all antifungals)—prepared in capsule form. "This works so well," says Dr. Hudson,"that I no longer prescribe douches for this condition."
