An aphrodisiac is defined as a substance or activity which is supposed to heighten sexual interest and desire. There are currently many substances and things throughout history that have been used as aphrodisiacs. Some cultures have built up their own aphrodisiac rituals such as dances whose purpose is to highlight female beauty arousing the audience.
The word aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of sensuality and love. The Greeks referred to sexual pleasure as aphrodisia and that is why any substance that enhances sexual pleasure would be called an aphrodisiac.
