Fiji tops them all ... An international survey has rated the Fijians as the happiest people in the world.

WHEN it comes to happiness, Fiji tips the scale.

That's according to the WIN-Gallup International Global Barometer of Happiness, which surveyed 58 countries.

A total of 52,913 people were interviewed, covering the vast majority of world population, while the Fiji sample was conducted face to face last month.

The result of the poll was released by the Tebbutt Research Group yesterday.

In Fiji, 89 per cent of the people surveyed said they were "happy", four per cent said they were "unhappy" and seven per cent were "neither happy nor unhappy".

"WIN-Gallup International Global Barometer of Happiness produces a net happiness score or index that is calculated by subtracting the percentage that are 'unhappy' from the percentage that are 'happy'," a statement said.

"For Fiji, the Net Happiness index stands at 85 (with 89 per cent happy less 4 per cent unhappy). The world index is 40, showing that the 'happy' outnumber the 'unhappy' by 40 per cent points."

The survey found that it was not the amount of money one had but the relative status which one enjoyed in society that made one feel happy.

"The surveyed countries included the poorest with an average yearly income of less than $US1000 ($F1789) and the richest whose average incomes are 50 times higher," the statement said.

"Yet when it comes to 'happiness' there was no clear relationship, with some of the world's wealthiest per capita income countries recording lower happiness, while some of the world's poorest per capita income countries being among the happiest. Among the top 10 happiness countries, the per capita income per person ranges from $US1660 (in Ghana) to $US50,170 (in Switzerland)."

Nigeria came in second place at 84 for the net happiness index, followed by Netherlands at 77. Australia came in at 32nd while the lowest net happiness countries were Romania (with a Net Happiness index of -10), Georgia (0), Egypt (0), Palestine (7), Serbia (8), Lithuania (9) and Iraq (19).
